Fall Is For Music

Everyone's favorite thing about fall seems to be pumpkin spice. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the season's flavors (Pumking beer being an anticipated indulgence), fall is one of those seasons where music surpasses foamy lattes and thrifted sweaters by distracting me from the ever-looming frost.

That and maybe it's the 15-year-old girl still inside me but I think we all want a soundtrack to our lives; filled with songs that bring memories of seasons past back to life and get you looking forward to the moments still to come. So I’ve created my very first autumn playlist.

On it are songs that make me think of warm nights in watching scary movies, cloudy walks home from work scuffing fallen leaves, and the way the first pair of socks you’ve worn since spring feel on your feet as you slip into old boots.

Some highlights:

  • “New Slang” – The Shins - Sipping an afternoon coffee at Java’s on my college campus in late October while scribbling poems and people watching. Natalie Portman circa Garden State.
  • “Piazza, New York Catcher” – Belle & Sebastian - Listening to a mix tape from a boy who had a crush on me while on the way to a high school football game. Still warm enough to crack the passenger side window, so you do.
  • “She Lit A Fire” – Lord Huron - Leaving at dawn to travel to the Adirondacks with Ben’s family, getting there and finally seeing the leaves change. Having tea on the dock and feeling the fog.
